About the Real Chevrolet LUV
The Chevrolet LUV (Light Utility Vehicle) was a compact pickup truck produced by Isuzu for Chevrolet, introduced in 1972 as a badge-engineered variant of the Japanese-market Isuzu Faster. To circumvent the 25% tariff on light trucks (known as the chicken tax), LUVs were imported in cab chassis configuration and fitted with truck beds once in the United States. The first-generation LUV (1972–1980) featured a 75 hp 1.8L inline-four engine and, in 1979, became the first four-wheel-drive minitruck available — earning Motor Trend magazine’s Truck of the Year award. It was eventually replaced by the domestically built Chevrolet S-10 after 1982.
