Matchbox Action Drivers Guide: Playsets with a Purpose
Action Drivers is Matchbox’s interactive playset line: tracks, launchers, garages and stunt sets built around the 1:64 cars. Where the mainline (our Matchbox mainline guide) sells individual vehicles, Action Drivers sells what you do with them — and it is the line most often responsible for a child’s first Matchbox memory.

What is in the Action Drivers range?
The assortment changes year to year but follows a pattern: launch-and-loop track sets, multi-level garages with working lifts and fuel stops, car-wash sets with moving brushes, and stunt challenges that fling cars through targets. Most sets include one or two exclusive vehicles, which matters to collectors because those exclusives often never appear in the mainline. Our Matchbox series explainer places Action Drivers in the wider Matchbox family alongside Convoys and Sky Busters.
Why collectors should care
Two reasons. First, the exclusive castings: vehicles bundled with Action Drivers sets can be the only way to get certain colours or models. Second, sealed vintage playsets from the classic era have a strong collector market of their own — a boxed 1980s garage in good condition is a genuine display piece. See our condition grading guide for how condition affects value across the range.
Buying Action Drivers in South Africa
Sets retail from around R200 for small launchers to well over R1,000 for flagship garages. Because boxes are bulky, many parents sell sets second-hand once children outgrow them — that is where the bargains live. Check our used diecast stock for used stock, and watch the SA Diecast Price Index to see what complete sets are fetching in rand.
