About the Real 1972 Datsun Sunny Coupe

The Datsun Sunny B110 was the second generation of Nissan’s compact car, launched in January 1970 and known as the Datsun 1200 in export markets. The coupe variant quickly established itself as a giant-killer on the track, thanks to its lightweight construction and rev-happy A12 engine.

The range-topping 1200 GX-5 model — added in August 1972 — was the one to have. The “5” stood for its close-ratio 5-speed floor-shift manual transmission, shared with the legendary Skyline GT-R and Fairlady Z. Fueled by a 130-PS A12 engine and paired with a 5-speed gearbox, this wide-tired, spoiler-equipped icon ruled the TS class of Japanese racing in the ’70s and early ’80s, capturing multiple championships at Fuji International Speedway and cementing its place in motorsport history. According to Nissan’s official heritage collection, the 1200GX-5 won TS Race championships in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1982.

The B110 featured MacPherson strut front suspension and a leaf-sprung live axle at the rear — simple, robust and perfectly suited to the rough-and-tumble world of touring car racing. In Australia and New Zealand, the Datsun 1200 was highly regarded as a rally car, even winning Class A at the 1970 Bathurst 500.

About the Compact Kings Series

The Compact Kings mini collection celebrates small cars that punched well above their weight — whether on the street, the rally stage or the racetrack. The 1972 Datsun Sunny Coupe closes the 2026 series as vehicle 10/10, a fitting finale for a car that proved you don’t need big displacement to win big trophies.
